Waifu2x vs Real-ESRGAN: Which Upscaler Wins?

June 2, 2026 ยท 5 min read

If you've ever looked for a free AI upscaler, you've probably encountered two names: Waifu2x and Real-ESRGAN. Both are open-source, both use neural networks, and both claim to upscale images "intelligently." But they're not the same thing โ€” and picking the wrong one can give you noticeably worse results.

Waifu2x: The OG Anime Upscaler

Waifu2x was released in 2015 by a Japanese developer. The name is a pun โ€” "waifu" (anime wife) plus "2x" (double resolution). It was built for one job: upscaling anime-style artwork while reducing noise.

What makes it special is its noise reduction model. Even at high upscaling ratios, Waifu2x can remove JPEG artifacts and smooth out grain while keeping edges crisp. For anime, manga scans, and digital illustrations, it's still arguably the best free option.

Best for: Anime, manga, digital art, illustrations, icons.

Real-ESRGAN: The Real-World Champion

Real-ESRGAN came later (2021) from the same lab that created ESRGAN. While Waifu2x learned from anime, Real-ESRGAN was trained on a much more diverse dataset โ€” including real-world photos with all their imperfections: blur, noise, compression artifacts, and low light.

Its secret weapon is a "high-order degradation model" that simulates real-world image quality problems during training. This means it handles photographs, screenshots, and compressed images much better than Waifu2x ever could.

Best for: Real-world photos, screenshots, compressed images, faces, landscapes.

The Verdict

Use Waifu2x if you're working with anime, digital art, or illustrations โ€” especially if you also want noise reduction.

Use Real-ESRGAN if you're upscaling real-world photos, screenshots, or anything with compression artifacts. It simply handles real-world degradation better.

Use our free toolsail upscaler if you don't want to install anything. It handles both use cases well with 2K free output, and Pro users get 4K/8K.
